Dr. Ramos says: It’s common to feel hesitant about seeking mental health support. Stigma often keeps older adults from diagnosis and treatment, as they may feel embarrassed or ‘weak’ by seeking help. However, remember that taking care of your mental health is a sign of strength.
5 signs of depression in older adults that are easy to miss
Good news: The National Institute on Aging (NIA) reports that most older adults feel satisfied with their lives. But depression can still affect seniors.
These are the hidden signs to look for, according to the NIA:
- Aches and pains (such as headaches, cramps, and digestive problems)
- Decreased energy or fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering things, or making decisions
- Moving or talking more slowly
- Sleep problems, such as insomnia or sleeping too much
If you spot any of these signs in yourself or a loved one, explore the resources at right and let your PCP know you’re receiving additional support so they can keep your care plan up to date.
