How to enroll in health insurance

There are two ways to enroll in a health insurance plan with Independence Blue Cross (IBX) – if you aren’t already enrolled in one. The first is through Open Enrollment; the second is through Special Enrollment – which you would take advantage of if you have a qualifying life event.

If you’re currently enrolled in a health insurance plan with IBX and would like to renew or make changes to your coverage, Open Enrollment is the best time to do so but you don’t have to wait for Open Enrollment to make changes if you have a qualifying life event.

Open Enrollment information

If you don’t have health insurance, Open Enrollment is the time to apply. If you do have health insurance – but want to shop and compare other health insurance options that might better fit your needs and budget, Open Enrollment is a great time to make a change.

Special Enrollment period information

The Special Enrollment period (SEP) is a period of time outside of the Open Enrollment period during which you may be eligible to apply for an individual or family health plan. If you experience a qualifying life event, such as getting married, having or adopting a baby, losing your coverage, or permanently moving into a new service area, you may qualify for SEP.
