Taking medications exactly as prescribed is one of the best ways to prevent complications — especially for conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. But it’s easy to miss doses when your schedule gets busy, or your prescriptions change.

Forgetfulness is a common reason you might miss a dose now and then. But it’s not the only one.  Others include side effects and cost. But cost should never prevent you from filling a prescription.

Your plan has ways to help you save on prescriptions and tools to simplify the process of finding nearby pharmacies, comparing drug prices and knowing which are covered by your plan, and making sure you have enough of your prescription meds on hand this winter.

Below are some tips, tricks, and tools for managing your meds without the headaches.

Ways to remember

While forgetfulness may be an occasional reality, it’s not an excuse to miss a dose of prescription medication — especially since there are ways to stay on top of which meds to take and how often. Here are just a few of our favorites:

Pill organizers: Whoever invented the oblong pill holders with different days of the week on each compartment knew how forgetful we can be. Setting aside some time to fill your weekly organizers can save you the stress of having to remember when to take your meds and which ones to take.

Calendar reminders: Whether you set daily or weekly ones on a digital calendar or prefer writing them on a paper one, reminders are effective or medication adherence.

Synching refills: If you can synchronize your refills so that you don’t have to make numerous trips to the pharmacy each month, this might also help you remember to take your medications.

Your pharmacist may even be able to provide you with a list of what time of day to take each medication, how often (once or twice a day or more), and whether to take them before or after a meal or with food.

Extended day-supplies: Making fewer trips to the pharmacy means taking your prescriptions is much easier. (It also saves you from having to bundle up when the weather gets nasty.) Ask your doctor about prescribing an extended day supply.
