Five easy ways to stay active this summer

Beat the heat — and stay in shape — with these easy summer fitness ideas.

Getting physical this season doesn’t have to mean long workouts in the heat.

Try these simple warm-weather activities — like early-morning walks, water workouts, and gentle strength exercises —  to build your stamina and keep your joints happy.

Start a walking group

Walking is one of the simplest ways to stay active. Just grab a group of friends and get started.

If you live near nature, consider taking a hike every so often for some variety and a higher-intensity workout.

Make some waves

Water workouts are easier on your joints than running or cycling — and they help you stay cool. Experienced swimmers can hit the pool for laps, while others may enjoy a water aerobics class. Both get your heart pumping without overheating.

Become one with nature

Look for fitness classes in local parks. Yoga and tai chi are gentle, low-impact options — and many are group workouts, so you can enjoy the social side of fitness, too.

Summer workout tips

Before starting a new routine, check with your doctor. Once you get the go-ahead, keep these tips in mind:

  • Replace lost electrolytes. Sports drinks like Gatorade or mix-ins like Liquid I.V. are great options.
  • Dress in loose, light-color clothing. Options labeled as “sweat-wicking” will help keep you cool.
  • Drink water every 5–10 minutes. Keep a water bottle nearby and take small sips often. If you find plain water boring, try adding fruit like strawberries or lemon.

Don’t force it

Listen to your body. If it feels too hot to exercise outside, wait until the evening or early morning when the temperatures are cooler.
