Independence 2024 Summer Internship Program

This paid program is open to college students of all majors who are interested in gaining real work experience through project-based internships in their fields of study. Most of the positions will be located at Independence’s headquarters at 1901 Market Street in Philadelphia.

Application process

Candidates must upload their résumés and submit their applications electronically. Candidates are encouraged to review the job descriptions, skill requirements, and internship locations, and to apply only for those positions for which they are qualified.

Interviews will be held at the office where the positions are located. If selected for an interview, candidates who attend universities outside the Philadelphia area may request a virtual interview.

2024 program dates

• Application period: October 23 – November 18, 2023
• Program start date: June 3, 2024
• Program end date: August 9, 2024
• Work hours: Monday — Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. (37.5 hours per week)

Program requirements

• Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college or university as a current junior, senior, graduate student or have graduated from an accredited college or university within one calendar year of the program start date.
• Authorized to work in the United States

Every candidate who is offered an employment opportunity with Independence is required to undergo pre-employment background check. Offers may be withdrawn for any candidate who fails to successfully complete the screening process.

Orientation

The one-day orientation provides a forum for interns to:

• Meet fellow interns
• Become familiar with Independence’s business strategies and areas of operation
• Gain insights into health care industry trends
• Ask the experts about the impact of health care reform on our nation

Meaningful work

Independence is committed to providing relevant and meaningful work experiences for our interns. Internships are project-based, and participants work closely with our full-time associates to support important business initiatives. Interns have the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge and gain real-world experience in their chosen field of study.

Professional development

Independence believes in the development of the whole person, and our internships reflect that belief in action. During the 10-week program, participants will attend professional development courses on topics such as professional networking, building your personal brand, and interviewing skills.

Guest speakers will present timely and relevant information topics such as health care reform, consumerism, and an overview of the health insurance industry.

Volunteerism

At Independence, improving the health and well-being of our community is just as important as improving the health and wellness of our members. Interns will participate in an event with the Blue Crew Corporate Volunteer Program, which is a comprehensive outreach program that serves as an extension of Independence’s social mission. The mission of the volunteer program is to strengthen the company’s role as a leader in community service through service projects that contribute to the well-being of the people in our region.

Evaluation and feedback

Interns and managers will meet regularly to share feedback and discuss opportunities for learning and improvements. At the end of the program, interns will be asked to complete an anonymous survey of their internship experience, and their feedback will be used to develop improvements for the following year.

Internships for credit

If a student requires an internship for credit, we will work with the university to ensure that the responsibilities and work experience outlined in the internship position meet the required criteria set by the university.
