Nursing Internship Program

The Independence Blue Cross (IBC) Nursing Internship Program is an integral part of IBC’s Nurse Scholars Program and supports our Social Mission commitment to address the nursing shortage and overall health care crisis in our region.

The IBC Nursing Internship Program is open to undergraduate nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation and who attend one of the accredited nursing programs in southeastern Pennsylvania supported by the IBC Nurse Scholars Program.

Two unique student nursing internship opportunities are offered through this program. One is for nursing students who would like to gain experience at IBC in a health care/insurance administration setting; the other is for nursing students interested in exploring the field of public health by interning onsite at a community health center clinic.

  • Nursing internships at Independence Blue CrossBridging the gap between the clinical setting and the practice of health care administration.

Student nurse interns assigned to IBC get a behind-the-scenes look at how managed health care works in a business and clinical setting. They will gain a new perspective on the multitude of roles that nurses play in health care administration, including case management, medical policy, quality management, and acquire an in-depth understanding of the policies and practices of a health insurance company.

  • Nursing internships at community health center clinicsExploring the challenges and rewards of public health and providing care to underserved populations.

Student nurse interns assigned to a community health center clinic gain practical clinical experience at area nonprofit, privately funded community health clinics. These clinics provide free or low-cost care to the uninsured and underinsured population throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and have received support through the IBC Charitable Medical Care Grant Program. Student nurse interns must assist under the direct supervision of nurses, certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs), nurse practitioners, or physicians on site at a clinic.

This is a temporary ten-week Nursing Internship program beginning Monday, June 7 through Friday, August 13, 2010. All internships are paid, temporary positions, Monday through Friday.

The application period for the 2010 IBC Nursing Internship Program is now closed.
