Improving Access to Health Care
Launched in late 2003, the Independence Blue Cross (IBC) Charitable Medical Care Grant Program provides financial support for nonprofit, privately funded community health center clinics located among the five counties in southeastern Pennsylvania that provide free or nominal-fee care to the area’s uninsured. The program also supports special projects that improve care or access to care for the uninsured.
In the fall of 2005, Independence Blue Cross expanded the Charitable Medical Care Grant Program and dedicated up to $2 million per year through 2010 to help the clinics and support special projects raising the total amount committed to the program to $14 million.
To date, the IBC Charitable Medical Care Grant Program has contributed more than $6.6 million in financial support to 31 local clinics that provided almost 270,000 visits to uninsured or underinsured patients in the last year.
