Charitable Medical Care Grant Program

As southeastern Pennsylvania’s leading insurer, Independence Blue Cross (IBC) understands that the uninsured crisis affects everyone, not just those without health coverage or access to health care services.

Our Mission

IBC created the Charitable Medical Care Grant Program as part of our ongoing Social Mission commitment to enhance the health and well-being of the community and to bring support and attention to the uninsured and medically underserved.

The program awards financial and programmatic grant support to nonprofit, privately funded health clinics that provide free or nominal-fee medical care to the uninsured and medically underserved communities in the five county region. Through this investment, IBC helps resource-strapped clinics to strengthen operations, build capacity, and ultimately expand access to primary and preventive care for vulnerable populations.

By partnering with local health care providers to improve health care access for the uninsured and underserved, the Charitable Medical Care Grant Program not only fills a void our community is struggling to address but also reduces costs linked to uncompensated care, inappropriate and avoidable use of emergency rooms, and expensive specialty care incurred due to lack of preventive treatment. Ultimately, these changes can reduce medical costs for everyone and enhance the quality of health care delivered by the regional health system.

IBC has committed $14.75 million through 2010 to the Charitable Medical Care Grant Program, and to date, has awarded $12.9 million to support 34 health clinics that served more than 110,000 unduplicated patients and provided over 340,000 clinic visits in 2008.
