Social Mission
Making a difference in our community
At Independence Blue Cross (IBC), we strive to enrich the community through our unique social mission, which includes a variety of programs and activities that help make health insurance more affordable to nearly 166,000 southeastern Pennsylvania residents. In fact, in 2006 we invested $77 million to help our neighbors in need.

Caring Foundation
To help children and adults who are uninsured, IBC has three coverage programs that provide free or low-cost access to health care:
Charitable Medical Care Grant Program
This IBC program awards financial and programmatic grant support to nonprofit, privately funded health clinics that provide free or nominal-fee care to the uninsured and medically underserved.
Nurse Scholars Program
IBC addresses the critical shortage of nurses and nurse educators through this original program, which is the first of its kind in the U.S. The Nurse Scholars Program supports nurses and nurse educators through the following programs:
- Nurse Faculty Program
The Nurse Faculty Program addresses the shortage of nursing educators by providing supplemental support to benefit local nursing programs hindered by lack of qualified faculty.
- Nursing Internship Program
This program is designed to give undergraduate nursing students a behind-the-scenes look at either managed health care or community and public health.*
