Independence Blue Cross Honored for Community Commitment in Delaware County

Resolution Presented to President and CEO Joseph A. Frick at Council Meeting

Philadelphia, PA - October 18, 2005 - The County Council of Delaware County today honored Independence Blue Cross for its recent contributions to enhancing the health care available to residents in Delaware County. Council members presented a resolution to IBC President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph A. Frick and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Christopher Butler at today's County Council meeting.

Independence Blue Cross (IBC) was recognized for its recent $300,000 grant to ChesPenn Health Services to help the agency meet its mission of serving residents of Delaware County. The grant is part of the company's Charitable Medical Care Grant Program, which provides financial support to non-profit, privately funded clinics in southeastern Pennsylvania who provide free or low-cost care to the area's uninsured. To date, IBC has granted more than $4 million to 22 clinics over a three-year period, in an effort to support quality care that ultimately reduces the number of uninsured individuals who require treatment at area hospitals.

“IBC recognizes the need for quality health care in Delaware County, and continues to work towards enhancing the level of health care that is available, as well as fostering the development of those who work tirelessly in the health care field,” said Linda A. Cartisano, Delaware County Council member. “We are grateful that IBC continues to demonstrate its commitment to our community through its social mission programs.”

IBC is also working to address the national nursing shortage affecting the Philadelphia area by providing scholarships to undergraduate and graduate nursing students training to become nurse educators. Through the IBC Nurse Scholars Program, the company has provided nearly $480,000 to students attending accredited nursing programs in Delaware County at Villanova University, Widener University, Neumann College, Eastern College, Delaware County Community College and the Delaware County Technical School.

“We at IBC are guided by a social mission - we're committed to improving the health of those in each of the communities we serve,” said Frick. “We are pleased to support local organizations so they can better serve area residents, and ultimately improve the quality of life in the community.”
