National Walk @ Lunch Day

Turn a Working Lunch into a Walking Lunch

Independence Blue Cross (IBC) is gearing up for the Philadelphia region’s third annual National Walk @ Lunch Day on Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Across the nation, Blue Cross® and Blue Shield® companies encourage employers, students, and state legislators to join together and wear comfortable walking shoes to simply take a walk at lunch. Be sure to put on your favorite blue shirt and join the tens of thousands of walkers participating in events across the country on April 28. Let’s make this year a great success.

Many of IBC’s customer groups will be joining the centralized walk at City Hall in Philadelphia. It’s a short walk, but a great way to kickoff a regular walking routine and to inspire one another to incorporate fitness into every day, a lifestyle that can make a difference in the overall health of a company’s employees.

When done briskly and on a regular basis, walking* can:

  • decrease the risk of heart attack and type 2 diabetes;
  • control weight;
  • improve muscle tone;
  • reduce stress.

*Consult your doctor before participating in physical activity that is new or strenuous for you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises: “activity that requires moderate effort is safe for most people. But if you have a chronic health condition such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, or other symptoms be sure to talk with your doctor about the types and amounts of physical activity that are right for you.”
