American Diabetes Association — Step Out

Walk to Fight Diabetes

On Saturday, October 4, more than 2,200 Philadelphia-area residents took part in the American Diabetes Association’s new Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes presented by Independence Blue Cross.  Through their fundraising efforts, Philadelphia’s Step Out walkers are closing in on an aggressive target of $400,000, which will support the Association’s mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

“Thanks to the energy, enthusiasm, and commitment of our walkers, volunteers, and sponsors like our friends at Independence Blue Cross, the 2008 Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes was a resounding success,” said Rosemary Turner, Step Out’s honorary chairperson and the Vice President of UPS’s Metro Philadelphia Division.  “The money raised is critical to the American Diabetes Association’s programs and efforts in research, education, and advocacy.  Plus the act of thousands of people walking — not just here but also in 172 Step Out events nationwide — builds awareness about diabetes and its devastating effects and creates momentum in the fight against it.”

“The Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes has been the perfect opportunity to inspire all of us to make our health a priority and to live a healthier lifestyle,” said Joseph A. Frick, president and CEO of Independence Blue Cross. “It’s very rewarding to be a part of something that brings our community together, raises awareness about the seriousness and urgency of diabetes, and generates funds to help find a cure. I’m pleased to say that our partnership with ADA is a great example of how Independence Blue Cross is here for our members, associates, and the community every step of the way.”
