College Internship Program

Our College Internship Program is open to students of all majors who are interested in gaining a first-hand look at what a future career at Independence Blue Cross (IBC) might be like.

Program Overview

All internships are paid, and students are expected to work full time, five days per week (37.5 hours). Internships are 11 weeks long, beginning in May and ending in August. Applications and résumés are accepted through March 15.

Who May Apply

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited program or have graduated from an accredited program within the last calendar year.

Selection Process

Interested students must apply for the program online by clicking the Apply Now button below. Students may apply for more than one position if they so desire.

Résumés will be evaluated based on experience, GPA, and major. If selected for an interview, the student will be contacted by the university relations coordinator to schedule a meeting with the hiring manager. Phone interviews may be scheduled if the student is outside the Philadelphia area. If selected to participate in the College Internship Program, students must follow IBC’s hiring process, which includes a preemployment drug screening and criminal background check.

Orientation

The two-day orientation program includes an introduction to the company, confirmation of work unit assignments, review of calendar of events and activities, new-hire processing, required training, and Q&A.

Meaningful Work

Students have the opportunity to validate their classroom learning, participate in daily operations, and support current business initiatives through project-based assignments. Interns will have clear project goals and objectives, and progress will be evaluated by both the hiring manager and the intern at regular intervals during the program.

Professional Development

Independence Blue Cross believes in the development of the whole person. Internships are that belief in action. During the 11-week internship program, students will attend professional development courses on topics such as professional networking, presentation skills, and interview skills.

Guest speakers will present timely and relevant information topics such as health care reform, consumerism, and an overview of the health insurance industry.

Volunteerism

Students will participate in an event with the Blue Crew Corporate Volunteer Program, which is a comprehensive outreach program that serves as an extension of IBC’s social mission. The mission of the volunteer program is to strengthen the company's role as a leader in community service through service projects that contribute to the well-being of the people in the region.

Evaluations

Student feedback is extremely important to the quality and success of our program. Participants will be asked to evaluate their College Internship Program experience with IBC during focus groups, one-on-one meetings with managers and the university relations coordinator, and electronic surveys. Responses will be used to improve future programs.
