Facilities are selected by the Blue Cross® and Blue Shield® Association (BCBSA) through a rigorous evaluation of clinical data that provides insight into the facility’s structures, processes, and outcomes of care. These nationally established criteria were developed with input from medical experts and organizations, and support the consistent, objective assessment of specialty care capabilities. The Blue Distinction program gives consumers access to quality information they need to make informed decisions about specialty care, including weight loss (bariatric surgery), cardiac care, and transplant services. Through the Blue Distinction Center designation, consumers can identify facilities that have extensive experience in these services, meet rigorous quality standards, and consistently demonstrate positive results.
