I. Steven Udvarhelyi, M.D.EVP of Health Services and Chief Strategy Officer
Dr. I. Steven Udvarhelyi is executive vice president of health services and chief strategy officer at Independence Blue Cross (IBC). He has responsibility for clinical services, including medical management, pharmacy management, and quality management; provider contracting and provider relations; and informatics, which comprises analytic and reporting support for all functional areas of the company. He also oversees the Office of Strategy and Planning, Corporate Development and Innovation, and Corporate and Association Affairs. The strategy role is responsible for working with the CEO and senior leadership team to help IBC achieve its vision and mission.
Dr. Udvarhelyi previously served 13 years as senior vice president and chief medical officer at IBC, overseeing medical management programs and policies, provider contracting and relations, enterprise-wide information management, and pharmacy services. He joined IBC in 1996.
A board-certified internist, Dr. Udvarhelyi has almost 20 years of experience in the managed-care industry, including working with the health plans of the Prudential Insurance Company of America in Florida, Georgia, and New Jersey, and as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. He has published numerous articles on quality in health care.
Dr. Udvarhelyi serves as chair of the board of directors of NaviNet, is on the national board of trustees for the Devereux Foundation, and on the board of directors of the Franklin Institute.
Dr. Udvarhelyi holds a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard College, a M.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and a master of science degree in health services administration from Harvard School of Public Health.
