WalkingWorks™
WalkingWorks is a national program developed by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) in cooperation with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to address the health challenges of the U.S. population. According to the BCBSA, "A regular routine of brisk-paced walking daily can help [your employees] lose weight, lower cholesterol, strengthen [their] heart, and reduce the likelihood of serious health problems down the road. And with America spending more than ever on preventable health problems like heart disease, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and conditions associated with obesity such as arthritis, every step counts."¹
The program uses pedometers or time to track daily walking activity, and an interactive website is available for employees to record and track progress online.
The program has three main goals:
- to incorporate physical activity into one’s daily routine;
- to track personal progress;
- to support continued participation with other ongoing health tools and resources.
During this program, you can expect to see motivated and engaged individuals, some friendly team rivalry (if utilizing the competitive program), and team-building among participants.
