How Health eTools WorksThe Health eTools for Schools program works in unison with most school electronic health records, allowing downloads of important student health information such as sequential height and weight measurements, immunization records, and medical diagnoses. With Health eTools, school nurses can conduct and record student health screenings which the Pennsylvania Department of Education requires schools measure and record annually using the Health eTools for School interactive software and handheld computers. The information can then be downloaded into the online student health records. Teachers, administrators, parents, and multidisciplinary teams can then use this information to develop and implement customized wellness activities and programs that help follow state or federal health policy requirements and improve nutrition and physical activity planning for children. Helping Schools Meet Wellness MandatesSchools that accept federal funding to subsidize their cafeteria lunch programs are obligated to develop and submit a wellness policy to the Pennsylvania Department of Education. This policy outlines each school’s wellness program and the guidelines, administrative procedures, and evaluation and communication plans that the schools will use to implement the policy. Additionally, the state requires that all schools measure students’ body mass index (BMI) and report the results to parents annually. The resources and tools offered in the Health eTools for Schools program can help schools comply with these state and federal mandates.
