Referral Submission Rules
Effective April 1, 2007, Independence stopped accepting paper referrals with HMO/POS claims for payment. Any paper referrals submitted after this date will be returned to the issuing provider without payment.
All referrals should be submitted through the NaviNet® web portal or via the Provider Automated System*.
Please check NaviNet or the Provider Automated System* to ensure that a referral was received for a member before services are rendered. Specialist are not permitted to accept paper referrals.

Provider Automated System*
To request referrals for non-migrated members, please call 1-800-ASK-BLUE.
*Independence is in the process of transitioning its membership to a new operating platform, generally based on when the customer/member's contract renews. Once a patient is migrated you will no longer be able to use the Provider Automated System for that member. This includes referral submission and retrieval, eligibility inquires, and claim status checks. We anticipate all commercial and Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO members to be migrated to the new platform by March 2015.
