IBC Sponsors "Living With Asthma Day"

Philadelphia, PA - February 24, 2005 - According to the American Lung Association, nearly 6.1 million children under the age of 18 are currently living with asthma. Asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalization of children under 15, and a chronic condition that, when not managed properly, can be life-threatening.

In our ongoing effort to educate members with this chronic condition, Independence Blue Cross is pleased to sponsor the American Lung Association of Pennsylvania and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's "Living With Asthma Day" on February 26, 2005.

"Independence Blue Cross is proud to sponsor Living with Asthma Day," says Dr. Richard Snyder, vice president, quality management. "It is our hope that through educational programs such as these, those suffering from chronic conditions like asthma can not only improve their health through better management of their condition, but also quality of life."

The program, which includes both a Parent's Forum and Children's Program, will run from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Franklin Institute and is free and open to the public. Topics at the Parent's Forum, located in the Pepper Hall Ballroom on the third floor, will include:

  • Pathophysiology of asthma and asthma medications overview
  • Setting up an asthma action plan for your child
  • Prevention & how to be proactive with your child's asthma care
  • And more

Presenters for Living With Asthma include all four authors of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Asthma Guide. The children's program is geared toward children ages 3-13 and will be held in the Stearns Auditorium on the first floor. Families who participate in the program will also receive free admission to the Franklin Institute.

Information on IBC's Asthma ConnectionsSM Health Management Programs will be available during the program. Members with asthma have 24/7 access to a Health Coach who can answer questions about asthma and help members learn to manage their condition and improve their overall health.
