Press ReleaseIBC is Lead Sponsor of “One Book, One Philadelphia”Philadelphia, PA – January 31, 2005 – Independence Blue Cross (IBC) announced that it had again agreed to be the lead sponsor of the third annual One Book, One Philadelphia, a joint project of the Mayor’s Office and the Free Library of Philadelphia. This marks the third year that IBC has been the lead sponsor to the Philadelphia reading model since it was launched in 2003. “Independence Blue Cross is proud to join with the Free Library and the City Administration for the third year in a project that brings our region together in such a positive way,” said Christopher Cashman, IBC Senior Vice President of Corporate and Public Affairs. “One Book One Philadelphia evolved from an experiment promoting literacy to become an important piece of the fabric of Philadelphia and the surrounding southeastern Pennsylvania region.” This year, Tim O’Brien’s The Things they Carried was selected as the book that people throughout the region will be reading. O’Brien’s collection of fictional stories about American soldiers in Vietnam was a finalist for both the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award and received France’s prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger. IBC’s sponsorship will help defray the cost of printing and distributing discussion materials and copies of the book. Thousands of area residents are expected to read and discuss The Things Day Carried during the One Book, One Philadelphia project this year. More than 150 official events will take place until its closing on March 15, including theatrical performances, panel discussions, film screenings, and author lectures and book signings. One Book, One Philadelphia kicked off on January 18 with a panel discussion of war, literature and remembrance at the Free Library. Independence Blue Cross is the leading health insurer in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Nationwide, IBC and its affiliates provide coverage to nearly 3.5 million people.
