Martin Luther King Jr. Honored Through Murals, Meals

IBC joins Mayor, Governor in Day of Service project

Philadelphia, PA - January 14, 2005 - Independence Blue Cross (IBC) will celebrate the tenth annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service by making January 17 "a day on, not a day off" by beautifying a local Germantown high school and preparing meals for low-income AIDS patients.

IBC Vice President of Government Relations Lorina Marshall-Blake, will join Mayor John Street and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell in painting the King Day of Service mural, led by Jane Golden and the award-winning Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.

Other members of the IBC's corporate volunteer program, the Blue Crew, will also be on hand at Martin Luther King High School to assist MANNA chefs in preparing meals for low-income AIDS patients.

"Martin Luther King, Jr. is an example of how one person can impact the lives of others," said Lorina Marshall-Blake. "Imagine the difference we can make as a group. What better way to honor Dr. King's legacy than to get involved and serve the community?"

The Martin Luther King Day of Service celebrates Dr. King by transforming the federal holiday into a day of active citizenship. The Blue Crew is part of the 40,000 volunteers in the region who are taking part in hundreds of service projects across the region to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King. IBC is a sponsor of the 2005 Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service.

Independence Blue Cross is the leading health insurer in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Nationwide, IBC and its affiliates provide coverage to nearly 3.5 million people.
