27th Annual Blue Cross Broad Street Run

Congratulations to the record breaking total of 13,550 runners who finished the Blue Cross Broad Street Run on Sunday, May 7. Spectators cheered on competitors for the length of the ten-mile race down Philadelphia's main thoroughfare. Independence Blue Cross was with them every step of the way.

Member Appreciation

Among the throng of runners this year were more than 5,000 members of Independence Blue Cross (IBC) health plans. IBC was pleased to say “thank you” for their participation by offering members a “head start” for the ten-mile race. Last year’s race participants were mailed personalized reminders to mark their calendars and encourage them to take advantage of a special early registration discount. To help members prepare in the months leading up to the race, IBC sent three monthly issues of a custom online training guide, right to their e-mail box. The e-newsletters included training regimens, gear checks, nutritional tips, as well as advice from local professionals on running, weight training, and cross training. And to top it off, members will receive a free pair of running socks and a runner’s logbook to give them a head start for next year’s race.

For a Great Cause

The real winner of this event was the American Cancer Society, the beneficiary of the race. Participants were encouraged to raise pledges and every dollar raised goes toward cancer research and patient care. Over the past decade, the Blue Cross Broad Street Run has generated over $200,000 for the American Cancer Society.

IBC Volunteers

Close to 100 IBC "Blue Crew" employees volunteered their time to the race and associated events. IBC applauds the physical and philanthropic efforts of race participants and would also like to thank all those who volunteered their time to make this event so successful.
