A lot can change in nearly 75 years, but one thing that’s remained constant is our dedication to the health and wellness of the communities we serve.
On October 6, 2011, we announced the creation of the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, a nonprofit organization that will draw on our years of experience and expertise to help address the region’s health care challenges.
The foundation has three main objectives:
The foundation will help to expand access to care by providing grants to private, nonprofit clinics that serve the uninsured. These clinics are often the only source of medical care available to low-income residents. The services these clinics provide save our region millions of dollars by avoiding uncompensated emergency room care and expensive specialty treatments people need when they don’t get regular check-ups.
The foundation will support seniors and their caregivers by working with area leaders to identify innovative ways to support the growing number of seniors and their caregivers in the Philadelphia five-county area.

To advance these objectives, the foundation will give a select number of Innovation Grants each year to support projects and research that significantly enhance the practice and delivery of health care.
Through its innovative Nurses for Tomorrow initiative, the foundation will immediately work to improve accessibility to and quality and delivery of health care by increasing the number of nurses and nurse educators in our region through nursing scholarships and grants.
Longer term, Nurses for Tomorrow will identify how nursing and nursing education need to evolve to address the needs of our changing health care system and will develop programs to address those needs.
