Independence Blue Cross announces grand opening of the Joseph A. Frick Conference & Learning Center

State-of-the-art center to enhance work environment for IBC associates

Philadelphia, PA - September 27, 2011 - Independence Blue Cross (IBC) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to commemorate its new state-of-the-art learning facility, the Joseph A. Frick Conference & Learning Center. The conference and learning center was created to enhance the work environment and productivity for all IBC associates and to honor Frick for his deep commitment to helping others fulfill their full potential. Frick served as IBC president and CEO from 2005 to 2010.

"At IBC, we are passionate about investing in our people and offering high-caliber programs and resources to help our associates develop new skills, reach their potential, and help us succeed," said Daniel J. Hilferty, IBC president and CEO. "I'm pleased to announce the new conference and learning center will be named after my predecessor and friend, Joe Frick, who has set an example for other leaders to follow through his remarkable commitment to developing people, both in his work and in the community."

The center, which encompasses two floors of the company's Philadelphia headquarters, features:

  • 14 classrooms to be used for high-level training sessions and presentations;
  • two video conference suites;
  • resource center with individual work spaces;
  • interactive whiteboard technology;
  • projection systems including wall mounted controllers;
  • flat-panel displays for presentations and live video conference collaboration.

During Frick's tenure as president and CEO, IBC established IBC University, a best-in-class associate learning and development initiative, that offers more than 2,000 high-quality courses and management and leadership-development programs through self-study online learning, classroom-based, or blended instructional formats. IBC also reinvigorated the associate wellness program and opened an onsite fitness center to enable associates to develop healthy habits, enhance their personal well-being, and set a positive example to the customers they serve. Frick has also encouraged local businesses to create youth internships for high school and college-aged students.

Recently, IBC partnered with St. Joseph's University and Community College of Philadelphia to offer IBC associates an opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree of professional liberal studies. Classes are held onsite at IBC headquarters at the end of the business workday.

The conference and learning center displays artwork created by children in the Fresh Artist program, a nonprofit organization devoted to empowering young lives through art. School children donate artwork to the program, which is reproduced for placement in corporate settings.
