Philadelphia games run September 7-17 and feature first-ever cycling event in Fairmont Park
Philadelphia, PA - September 7, 2011 - Independence Blue Cross is once again sponsoring the Philadelphia Senior Games, which begin today at a kick-off event from noon to 6 p.m. at the Center in the Park in Vernon Park. The games end on September 17 with a first-ever cycling event at Memorial Hall in Fairmont Park.
IBC has sponsored Senior Games in southeastern Pennsylvania since they began in the late 1980s. For more information about the Philadelphia games, including times and locations, visit Senior games at Center in the Park.
Earlier this summer, IBC sponsored senior games in Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, and Delaware counties. More than 2,000 individuals ages 50 and older have already participated in the games this year, showing their commitment to staying physically and mentally fit.
The games featured a wide variety of activities including swimming, running, golf, bowling, tennis, track and field, horseshoes, dance, shuffleboard, chess, scrabble, and more, sponsored by the Departments of Recreation and/or Services for the Aging in each county. Winners from counties throughout Pennsylvania went on to compete in the state games in York, PA, which was held July 26-31.
“We’re happy to once again be part of this terrific event,” said Roger van Baaren, Director, Medicare Marketing & Product Management for Independence Blue Cross. “The Senior Games unite our community, bringing together people of all ages to have some fun, exercise a little competitive spirit, and support good health and fitness.”
