Independence Blue Cross Launches 'Get Out, Get Fit! Photo Contest' on July 28

IBX Healthy Steps social media campaign encourages the community to get fit

Philadelphia, PA - July 28, 2011 - Independence Blue Cross (IBC) believes that meaningful change toward a healthy lifestyle can happen with small, manageable, and consistent steps. To help individuals make positive choices that will last a lifetime, IBC launches a photo contest as part of Get Out, Get Fit!, phase two of its IBX Healthy Steps social media campaign with a focus on fitness, physical activity, and walking for good health.

"By connecting to individuals through social media like Facebook and Twitter, we have the opportunity to deliver relevant and unique health information through the channels that they access most often," said John McClung, IBC's vice president of advertising and creative services. "Ultimately, our goal with IBX Healthy Steps is to provide an online community where fans can learn the latest tips from fitness and nutrition experts while sharing their own experiences and advice with like-minded followers."

Get Out, Get Fit! on the IBX Healthy Steps Facebook page features fitness videos from Kimberly Garrison, personal trainer and fitness editor for the Philadelphia Daily News. These simple-to-follow demonstrations take the viewer to some of our region's most scenic and fun outdoor locations where Garrison offers practical fitness tips that can be worked into any daily routine.

"I strongly believe that small steps lead to big success when you're looking to achieve a balanced, healthier life," said Kimberly Garrison. "I'm proud to channel my passion for fitness by partnering with the IBX Healthy Steps initiative to provide health insight and motivation that is easy to access, practical, and inspiring."

IBX Healthy Steps connects individuals with tips for better living through Facebook and Twitter. Followers can uncover a world of healthy steps, such as:

  • step-by-step exercise instructions;
  • health and wellness tips delivered directly to a social media news feed;
  • online connections with other health-conscious fans;
  • maps of favorite local places to workout.

Get Out, Get Fit! Photo Contest
Independence Blue Cross is giving away a $500, a $250, and a $100 gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods to fitness-focused fans who submit photos of themselves exercising at their favorite outdoor locations. The three fans whose photos get the most votes will be the contest winners. Fans need to take three simple steps to participate:

  • "Like" our Facebook page to enter.
  • Upload a photo featuring them working out at a favorite spot between July 28 and August 31, 2011.
  • Spread the word to family and friends and encourage them to vote for a specific entry from September 1 - 15, 2011.

Winners will be announced on September 21, 2011.

Get Out, Get Fit! is one of five fitness-focused IBX Healthy Steps initiatives launched by Independence Blue Cross since December. Phase one of IBX Healthy Steps allowed IBC Facebook fans to view and download simple recipes and expert nutrition advice offered by celebrity chef and dietician, Katie Cavuto Boyle. 

In April, Independence Blue Cross piloted an interactive kiosk at the Philadelphia International Airport that offers round-the-clock health and wellness information for travelers and airport employees.  In June, the company announced a partnership with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's pop-up garden at 20th and Market Streets where PHS is growing vegetables, herbs, and grains to garner support and awareness for its City Harvest program, which provides fresh produce for underserved residents. 

And in July, the free, GPS-based IBX Healthy Steps Pedometer app became available through the Apple App Store and the Android Marketplace. The pedometer app allows users to track workouts, monitor their fitness levels, and share workout status using social media.
