Independence Blue Cross Honors Martin Luther King, Jr. with Day of Service
Philadelphia, PA - January 16, 2009 - Independence Blue Cross associates will join thousands of volunteers on January 19 in the largest Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service event in the nation and mark the federal holiday with a day of active service. Independence Blue Cross is a sponsor of the 2009 Martin Luther King Day of Service.
About 86 members of Independence Blue Cross’s corporate volunteer program, the Blue Crew, will make it “a day on, not a day off” at the14th annual Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service through two events:
- Resources for Human Development (Philadelphia, PA). Some 26 volunteers will be on hand at two homeless shelters to clean, paint, move furniture, assemble and install shelves, and organize donations: The Woodstock Family Center, which provides emergency shelter for homeless families with children, and the Ridge Center, which is a homeless facility for adult men.
- George Washington Carver Community Center (Norristown, PA). About 60 volunteers will give the center a much-needed makeover and clean and repaint the gym, kitchen, and entranceway. The Carver center brings people together to socialize and share ideas and provides recreation to a community where 76 percent of families with children live in poverty.
Philadelphia is expected to have the largest event in the nation for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service with an estimated 65,000 volunteers in 750 service projects.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service celebrates Dr. King by transforming the federal holiday into a day of active citizenship. Since 1996, the Greater Philadelphia Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service has been the largest King Day of Service event in the nation. The event is organized by Global Citizen, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement, community volunteering, civic responsibility, and sustained active citizenship.
